I am the special education co-teacher for a second-grade classroom in a low-income/high-poverty Title I school in Delaware. Our students are faced with many challenges on a daily basis in and out of school. They come to school to work hard in an environment that embraces their learning challenges and helps them succeed.
Throughout the day, we teach our students to become independent thinkers who will do the right thing in challenging situations and persevere through difficulties.
My students support one another, creating an inviting learning community where they feel comfortable taking risks.
My students are wonderful second graders who are now expert technology users after having been virtual or hybrid learners during various times throughout their school career. All of our students are now equipped with 1:1 devices (Chromebooks.) In the classroom, they use their Chromebooks to learn a variety of things. They read books online using sites that support children's e-books. The students also use an interactive math and reading site called iReady for enriching and supporting our math and reading content. There are many other ways we will use the Chromebooks throughout the school year, too. The students will also use them to write, research topics (health, science, etc.) and view educational videos to support learning content.
We do have a slight problem though! We can't keep all the Chromebooks charged because we don't have an efficient or organized way to keep them charged. This has been causing the students stress as not everyone is able to use their device when needed. My project will solve this stressful situation by providing a way to keep my new class's devices charged and organized. The students will be able to use their devices when needed.
