Help me give my students the basic supplies they will need in class and our STEM Club.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. McKellar's classroom raised $380

My Project
I teach in Lowell, Massachusetts at the BCPS. We are a pre-k to 8 school and draw from the entire city (as opposed to a neighborhood school). This is a low-income, urban school district. All our students receive free breakfast and lunch. I lead an active STEM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) of about 25 students from grades 5 through 8.
This group of students are inquisitive and enjoy challenging themselves with new experiences.
During our STEM Club meetings we have disassembled and reassembled a Dyson vacuum cleaner (and it still worked!), explored the causes and effects of certain chemical reactions, tested the water quality in our school, performed the egg drop challenge from the 3rd floor roof and grew bacteria cultures from samples throughout the school.
My STEM Club students are a curious group of young people. They are interested in understanding how things work, but they lack hands-on opportunities to follow that curiosity.
My project will introduce them to model rocketry as a way of understanding how rockets work and the underlying physics.
They will follow instructions, work together, use their creativity and build their own model rocket. Then we will fly them. Model rockets and motors are critical to this effort.
The Next Generation Science Standards encourages model building, in all its iterations, for middle school students: "A practice of both science and engineering is to use and construct models as helpful tools for representing ideas and explanations. These tools include diagrams, drawings, physical replicas, mathematical representations, analogies, and computer simulations."
Nearly all students from low‑income households
