Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Fourth grade is the magical year when a child is still curious and full of wonder but has not yet reached those awkward pre-teen years. I am lucky to teach a classroom of 24 4th graders at Darwin Elementary School in Chicago. The majority of my students receive free lunches and they have a rich ethnic diversity. It is my first year teaching; it is a challenge but I love it!
My greatest goal for the year is to foster a love of reading in my students. Reading is a means to tap into their imaginations and hold on to their childhoods, which are quickly lost in their tough neighborhood. I believe this is possible by creating a reading program that allows them to read with a small group at their own reading level and to have discussions about their books. Group discussions will give them greater understanding of their books and motivate them to dig deeper while reading.
Therefore, I am writing a proposal for a library of books for literature circles. In order to work in groups to read shared stories, the classroom will require six copies of each book. To meet the needs of the different levels of readers in my classroom, I would like to order sets of books that are appropriate for my struggling readers (Level One), my students who are just right (Level Two), and for my high achievers (Level 3).
Here the breakdown of titles per level:
Level One: My America: Freedom's Wings, Corey's Underground Railroad Diary; Pedro's Journal; Dare to Dream; Amazing Grace; Class President; The Stories Julian Tells
Level Two: Bunnicula Strikes Again; Dear Mr. Henshaw; The Well; Bud, Not Buddy; Rosa Parks: My Story; Stone Fox
Level Three: Knots in My Yo-Yo String; Freedom Train; Crispin; Jip: His Story; Stealing Home: The Story of Jackie Robinson; Morning Girl
