Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school consists of over 68% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Some of my students are already facing challenges in trying to blend in and learn a new language. Many of the kids are English language learners who have immigrated to this country. Many students come from households that are limited to helping them with basic skills. They depend 100% on all school materials to learn new concepts, do research and create projects. All kids regardless of their backgrounds are eager to learn and have new experiences.
My Project
Independent writing seems to be an area in where both adults and children struggle. Writing can especially be more difficult when you are just beginning to learn to read. It proves to be more challenging when you are also juggling a new language. I want to make writing something my students look forward to doing, I want them to know that they have the power to let their imagination go and create writing masterpieces using flair pens as our writing program suggests.
We will use the desk organizers, compartment sorters and bins to store our writing folders and our different writing paper choices.
Students will have access to creating illustrations that go with their writing by using different writing tools such as the silly scented pencils. They will have access to sharpening their utensils with an electronic sharpener, not a manual one anymore! Our timer with help them manage their writing time and help keep them on track.
My goal is to teach different writing genres, we will use the different books such as The Best Story, The Rain Stomper and Ugly Fish to dissect what each author does to bring this story to life and use those strategies in our own writing. At the end of each trimester will have a book-sale on books they have written and will display them for parents on our wire counter-top.
I look forward to making writing an exciting time for them, I no longer what them to dread writing time. With your generous donations we can make this a reality for each child. Thank you!
