My Students
Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC; where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced priced lunches and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, 6 of my 15 kindergarten students have Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) addressing their various needs (ie., developmental delays, speech and language impairments, autism, and/or behavior challenges).
Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading or mathematics, or in both areas; and would benefit tremendously from wobble (wiggle) cushions, floor-level comfy seats, and bouncy bands for chairs.
It should be noted, however, that all of my students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new; and have shown so much growth and potential for excellence since their very first day of school back in August, which seems so long ago!
My Project
With the donation of wobble (wiggle) cushions, floor-level comfy seats, and bouncy chair bands, my students' squabbling over the lack of comfortable seats, and disrupting other students with feet fidgeting will decrease; and on-task behaviors with improved posture will increase! Each student chair will be equipped with both a wobble (wiggle) cushion and bouncy chair band. The comfy chairs will be placed in the reading center to provide students with an option of quietly sitting on the rug or sitting on a floor-level comfy chair.
Research has shown that "children who are more active exhibit better focus, faster cognitive processing, and more successful memory retention than those who spend the day sitting still."
In addition, "keeping the body active promotes mental clarity by increasing blood flow to the brain, making activity vital to both learning and physical and neurological health." That being the case, flexible seating in my classroom will not only give my students much needed opportunities to wobble and fidget with chair bands while learning in the kindergarten classroom, but will also, hopefully, give them an edge cognitively!
My special needs students have various disabilities, often coming from different backgrounds or households led by single parents; and frequently have specific individual needs based on both academic and social emotional learning. These students would benefit tremendously from additional opportunities for movement in our kindergarten classroom. Your generous donations are most appreciated.
