My fifth grade students are from sunny Southern California. We are fortunate enough to have good weather most of the year, so it is no surprise that my students love to be outside, and that they really enjoy being at the beach. My students like to participate in group games, and they are always up for learning a new one. After a recent trip to the beach, my students came back excited about a new game called Spikeball. They asked if we could bring the game to our school, and I am hoping to do just that with the help of Target.
My Project
Spikeball is a game that has piqued the interest of my students, and I can see why. It blends the best elements of volleyball & four square, and it is played with teams of two serving and hitting the ball off the net for a series of volleys until one team reaches 21 points. And best of all, Spikeball can be played just about anywhere! While my students originally saw the game at the beach, it can be played on the blacktop or field as well. In order to build on my students’ excitement, I am requesting 17 Spikeball/Slammo kits so that my students can learn the game they asked about.
Fifth grade is an important time for students.
They are transitioning from being young kids to being young adults. It is a time when they need to develop healthy habits, find interests that keep them active, and to work on cultivating their friendships. This project will allow my students to do all of that. Learning how to play Spikeball/Slammo will give my students a chance to increase their peer-to-peer learning. Very few of my students have played this game before, so they will all be learning how to play together. They will share their tips and cheer on each other’s success. This is an important team building experience and it will teach the kids a game they can play for the rest of their lives.
By knowing how to play a game like Spikeball, students will be working towards achieving their recommended sixty minutes of activity a day. I will store the Spikeball/Slammo kits in our PE shed, which will make the game accessible to the more than 600 students are our school.
