Ready Set Research!! 4th grade STEM

My students need an iPad that comes with a cover and screen protector to do in class research as well as a cd player to listen to music during research.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Asay's classroom raised $745

My Students

The majority of my students do not understand how to do research. This is their year to learn. My biggest challenge right now is that I need the technological resources in my classroom to help them learn how to do this. My students will be doing research daily in science, math and social science.

My students are fourth graders.

I have approximately sixty of them. They are enrolled in the Dual Language Immersion Program at our elementary school. For half of the day, the students are completely immersed in Chinese. No other language is allowed. Then for the other half of the day, they come to my classroom to learn math, science, social science and English. While I am teaching half of the students, the other half are in their Chinese class. Then at the middle of the day, the other half comes to my class to be instructed while the class I was teaching, goes to their Chinese class. Because of this immersion, time is of the essence. It cannot be wasted. We must use every minute of it to instruct our students. The students work extremely hard to complete in half of a day what their counterparts would complete in a whole day because half of the day they are learning Chinese. In this program, I teach students of all learning levels. Minority groups are also represented in my class.

My Project

This is the year that elementary students really begin to learn how to do research. The iPad will be used on a daily basis by sixty students. These students will need to support their thinking in the areas of science, math and social studies by evidence from their research. First of all, I will model to my students how to search for research evidence on the iPad. When my students understand the research process, they will use the iPad to support their thinking. For example, a weekly question like this will be purposed to the students, "Are human beings helping or hurting the wetland environments?" The students will answer "yes" or "no" and then give written evidence from the research they conduct on the iPad to support their thinking. Since all of the students will be using the iPad, a case and a cover are vital to protect it. Also, I would like my students to listen to calming music when they do this research, that is why I am requesting the CD player. A relaxed student learns more.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom and change my students' lives.

My classroom will be improved because I will have an iPad in the classroom. It will allow my students to research questions that are posed to them. This will change my students' lives because they will find answers to questions and generate more questions. As Albert Einstein said, "The important thing is to not stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing." The CD player will play calming music.
