This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 24 energetic fourth graders in my New York City classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households, but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after-school programs as well, so they spend the majority of their day in school.
My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.
We not only focus our academic goals, but on our social-emotional goals as well. We are involved with the Leader in Me program and practice our 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We understand that in order to be successful in school, we must always try our best. We motivate each other and work as a team.
My Project
Spring is around the corner and we can't wait for the weather to get warmer so we can go outside and play. It would be awesome if we could get some recess equipment to play with. We would love to get basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, jump ropes, a badminton set and sidewalk chalk. They would get us up and moving.
It so important for children to get daily exercise in order for them to do well in school.
Play is also a vital component for their social development. Children learn to be good team players, follow directions, and develop sportsmanship skills during recess activities. Many of my students stay in school until 6:00 p.m. and therefore do not have time to go to the park after school. The opportunity to go outside and play during the school day for even just 20 minutes will be very beneficial. In addition, I also notice that when the children are encouraged to play together, they get along better during small group academic activities.
It's been a long cold winter here in N.Y.C. and we are looking forward to springlike weather. We are ready to got out and play!
