Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Throughout the school year, I work with nearly 200 students who need small-group, targeted reading instruction. These kindergarten through fifth-grade students require support to feel confident on their journey to becoming readers. When students join my group, I aim to set them up for success by providing them with a take-home folder, complete with a special pocket to keep their books and reading passages organized and easily accessible. They decorate their folders, making them unique and personal. The students I work with often struggle with maintaining focus and need encouragement to make positive choices. Rewards and incentives play a key role in motivating even my most reluctant learners.
Learning to read is a science, and unfortunately, it doesn’t come easily to every student.
My goal is to bridge that gap by giving my students the tools they need to make their journey more achievable. The folders will be used daily to carry books and passages for reading practice. Repeated readings help build fluency and comprehension. The whiteboard markers will allow students to annotate, form letters, words, and sentences in their folders. The new prize box will provide additional motivation, offering rewards for students who give their best effort.
