Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The more students read, the better they become at reading. The more they enjoy the books they read, the more they'll continue reading and developing those skills. My students are hungry for books! Unfortunately, they don't have the resources necessary to build their own personal libraries.

My students haven't been exposed to the world outside their little city.

They see the world mostly as Hispanic, and are unaware of the various world cultures. As 8th graders, we study the theme of the American Dream. Why do people come to America? Why have their parents come to America? What is the American Dream? I'd love to give my students an opportunity to explore this theme further with a book of their choice. My students are hard workers and enjoy reading. They are determined to beat the odds and go to college. They identify themselves as scholars. And truly, they are. Unfortunately, they don't have the necessary support and resources to purchase their own books. I would hate for that to be the reason why these students can't grow and develop these essential academic and life skills.

My Project

A good book has the potential to change someone's life. This is what I hope to accomplish through my literature circle unit. Through exploring the theme of the American Dream, students will immediately identify with the characters' life stories. Most, if not all, of my students have their own immigration story. I want them to ponder the essential questions, "Why am I in America? Why did my parents come here? What is the American Dream? Is it really only a dream?" This way, they can completely connect to the ideas in our novels as they never have before. The novels I have selected portray immigration stories from different cultures, including the Philippines, Ireland, Mexico, Korea, Africa, etc. I'm so excited to expose my students to different world cultures, as several of them haven't stepped foot into even a neighboring city!

These books have the power to transport our students, many of whom have never traveled to a neighboring city, to another country, world, and culture.

I've carefully selected books that will speak to my students, and your donation will not only impact their reading and academic skills, but their awareness of the world in which they live. Thank you in advance for supporting this cause.
