My students haven't been exposed to the world outside their little city. They see the world mostly as Hispanic, and are unaware of the various world cultures. As 8th graders, we study the theme of the American Dream. Why do people come to America? Why have their parents come to America? What is the American Dream? I'd love to give my students an opportunity to explore this theme further with a book of their choice. My students are hard workers and enjoy reading. They are determined to beat the odds and go to college. They identify themselves as scholars. And truly, they are. Unfortunately, they don't have the necessary support and resources to purchase their own books. I would hate for that to be the reason why these students can't grow and develop these essential academic and life skills.
