My Students

Can you imagine teaching reading with no books?! Unfortunately, this is my daily struggle as we are not provided with many reading materials to supplement our daily reading program.

Most of my students enter my third grade classroom as struggling, below-grade level readers.

For many of the students I teach, my classroom is the only place they have access to reading materials. Yet, despite the obstacles they face, they love to read! They work so hard to become great readers no matter what it takes. It is my job and ultimate goal to provide a learning environment that is rich in good literature, so they can reach their goals.

My Project

Each day, our reading program requires that we expose our students to read alouds in order to model good reading behaviors and develop important reading strategies. However, we are not provided with many books to carry out this program. My mornings have turned into a scavenger hunt trying to find the books I am looking for. I must scramble to ask colleagues or search the library to track down a good read aloud. My reading lessons would be more engaging and more effective if the books were easily accessible in my own classroom. I am hoping to bring these books into my own classroom. I would be able to plan my lessons further in advance and be more familiar with each book. This would also enable me to pinpoint specific strategies I could model when reading each book. Furthermore, my students would have access to the books as well. Instead of having to immediately return the books to a colleague or the library, the books would remain in my classroom and be accessible to my students.
