I am a First Grade teacher in a low income, high poverty school district, where 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Our school serves over 200 First and Second Grade students every day. Our staff continues to create a safe atmosphere of acceptance and love for our students. We meet each child where they are while fostering a lifelong love of learning. For many of our students, school is the only place they feel safe, accepted and loved.
First Grade is all about learning to read and becoming fluent readers! Can you imagine having the daunting task of teaching something to your students and not having the tools to make them successful? My students need to listen to others read, to build their own fluency in reading. A classroom listening center will allow students to strengthen vocabulary and literacy skills, while enjoying fun and engaging stories. I will use this center rotation each week and create meaningful lessons to extend what the students have read. I truly believe this center will begin to encourage a love for reading and foster life long learners!
