Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 3rd grade students are amazing, hard-working, enthusiastic scholars. Our school is in East Oakland and 98% of our families qualify for free lunch. The majority of students are learning English as their second language and many are bi-literate. This community is on the front lines of the budget cuts. Our students live in a community with high poverty and loving families. They and their families have a high expectation of their school experiences.
All of my students come to school excited to learn new things, ready to make new friends and brimming with wonderful ideas.
For many, third grade is a year that marks a transition to being a "big kid": proficient reader, researcher, and scientist publishing their own writing, a role model for the little kids and metacognitive about their learning. My goal is to create a classroom where they thrive. I want to build a community of scholars where we support each other and use every day to get better at becoming the thoughtful, creative, caring and responsible individuals they want to be.
My Project
The beginning of a new school year can be an exciting or anxious time. Making that first day be a welcoming experience can lower that anxiety. I hope my students will find the first day of school uplifting, immediately feel part of a caring community and get excited about the work ahead of them. I want them to walk into their new class and find fresh new supplies that they will personalize and use the whole year to keep them organized and ready to do their best.
In our crowded classrooms with hand-me-down furniture and books, students need to have a new set of supplies that are just for them.
We will talk all year long about healthy practices and individual water bottles allow students to make sure that they stay hydrated and build a life long habit of drinking water when they are thirsty.
Staying organized is another habit that I can nurture with the right supplies. Color-coded folders, pencil pouches, and individualized writing supplies mean that all students can have what they need to do their best work quickly available in their desks. Having these supplies ready for students on day one will let them feel welcomed and an important part of our new learning community.
