My Students

A typical day in my wonderful class starts as the students begin their morning reading independently. Throughout the day they engage in different reading activities like buddy reading, close reading, and guided reading. The students enjoy reading and often wish for more diverse text.

My school is located in the heart of Harlem, New York in an area that has very limited resources.

Most of the students receive free lunch and due to budget cuts, our students do not have access to a school library. This has made it challenging for my students to be able to increase their reading levels and take more books home to encourage parent support. They have a high interest in reading fiction and non fiction text and they would greatly benefit from having books to support with completing school and home tasks. Our class motto is "We will be second grade ready." I have set the tone and the expectations that we will be on or above reading level. Reading has such a great impact in our everyday activities and with the demands of the Common Core curriculum, the more books available the more the reading and writing can grow! My class and I will forever be thankful for your support and this will make our hearts smile.

My Project

The students will be able to have access to books on various reading levels which will help improve their overall reading skills. Students needing more support will also benefit from the materials as well. All the materials requested will help students with their independent, partner, and guided reading activities.

These materials will have a great impact in preparing the students for the next grade.

It will also build the students' reading confidence which will help in other academic areas such as math, social studies, and science.
