My Students
A middle school extensive support needs classroom is a special group of students with unique skills, challenges, and learning needs. Some of my students are learning how to read paragraphs, solve basic math problems, and write words while their other classmates are learning how to recognize letters, say words intelligibly, and count. Our group has developed a liking for technology, dancing, and art activities.
Students with exceptional learning needs are the ones who will have the most challenges in this remote learning happening worldwide.
My group of students needs the most help in hands-on activities that we would normally do in a face-to-face classroom. We all work together to complete cooking a dish or preparing a snack, keep the classroom clean by doing chores, and working out together daily. Despite the distance learning that we are all bound to do until the school year ends, my group has proved that they are so happy about the thought of school still. I can see this with consistent daily attendance and participation. My students inspire me.
My Project
The district I work for is planning to begin full in person learning this fall and upon reaching out to our principal, my staff and I found that we have some pieces of furniture that we still need to make sure that our classroom is ready for our students. Having an organized learning environment will help my students thrive and become more excited in going back to school.
A couch, a bag storage and a complete set of room dividers will help organize the space in the classroom; while a power cord will allow students to have a charging station for their tablets.
My students typically work in smaller learning centers and it is essential for them to be aware and eventually, familiar, with how their learning space will be for them. I know that it'll be easier for them to be more efficient with their workload if they knew the space well and if they will have a comfortable area for reading and breaks.
