I am currently a third grade teacher in the Bronx. My students range from age 8 to 10 and consist mostly of African American and Hispanic descent. My students struggle with poverty, single parents, working parents, and broken homes.
While the curriculum wants me to introduce my third graders to social studies, in particular the Continents of the world, I have no supplies. I have ten outdated workbooks for a class of 22 students. Many of the pages are ripped or scribbled on, information is outdated or incorrect. I try to bring the Continents to my students through outside literature, maps, newspaper, and video. They deserve a chance to explore other countries in a more hands on and concrete way. My students families are from all over the world, this subject in particular, really sparks interest. It is this interest I hope to capture and develop.
By allowing my students the opportunity to use the Continents Around the World Activity Chest, I am giving them the opportunity to explore aspects of countries they have only heard about. The Desktop Write and Wipe maps will allow my students a chance to view the vastness of our world and learn necessary map skills. Also this can provide the students with resources for research project which will in turn develop the necessary writing skills. The daily activities will allow me to give parents access to the learnings that are going on in our classroom. This will build a bridge between home and school that is crucial to all students.
The simple act of making this donation can and will impact students more than you can ever imagine. You have the chance to make a third grade students face light up with excitement about school. The chance to get their hands on materials that brings all they have heard about form me is all it takes to make learning real and worthwhile. Don't sell my students short give them the chance to experience what is outside the Bronx and you give them a chance at building dreams outside the Bronx thank you for thinking of us!
