Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
My students' research projects will have long-lasting effects that will transform their lives and their communities. This year my students will create a research project focused on the college application process, financial aid, and college life with hopes of creating a college-going culture.
This school year, we have really focused on research. I began with a group of students who had never engaged in a true research process. For them "googleing " a topic was the extent of the research they've been asked to do in seven years of schooling. Students have come to enjoy and become accustomed to performing critical, in-depth research on topics that affect their daily lives. We've research unemployment rates and causes, immigration, and work place discrimination. For their final project, students chose a topic of inquiry. They chose college. They want to know what it takes to make it to college and be successful in their career of choice.
Through this research, students will be able to not only research and present their investigative projects on what it takes to be college eligible, but also how attaining and education can transform their lives and the future of their communities. They will use reliable statistics and research real-life examples of personal and communal well-being through education. Most importantly, students will be able to present their projects to other classes where we hope they encourage other students to begin thinking of a college education as viable for them.
In Their Own Words
We will create a multimedia project focused on what it takes to make it to a great college. I want to find out what tests I need to take, what classes I need to take in high school, and ways that I can get help to pay for college. My parents cannot afford an expensive college, but I'm sure I can get a scholarship to help.
I'm a very shy student, but I am looking forward to this project because, unlike projects for other classes, what we present will stick with us for a long time. That is why our teacher promised to help me (and others) with techniques that will get rid of our stage fright. I want to be a more confident public speaker and Ms. S. will help me with that.
Not too many people around here go to college. Basically, the only people who we know that have a college degree are our teachers. That's sad. We should be exposed to more people who are successful in their education, careers, and who have pushed through difficult times to get to where they are. Hopefully we can encourage other kids to go to college because our future depends on it.
