We are a relatively small suburban K-8 school district in Northern California where the students are representative of many different cultures and socioeconomic levels. My 6th grade core students have a daily opportunity to incorporate language arts and social studies skills. Because of the diversity of the student population, the children in my classes are able to contribute a wide range of experiences in support of our curriculum.
We are historians.
We travel to many countries in our quest for knowledge of ancient world civilizations. We search for evidence, analyze, argue, and explain how the ancient world contributes to our modern world. We are poets, critical thinkers, and admirers of literature. We are collaborative learners.
My Project
A debate here, a Socratic seminar there. My goal is to provide more engaging opportunities for students to discuss ideas, opinions and to argue claims. Working together in groups, fostering strategies for discussion and supporting peer to peer learning is a critical and focal point in middle school. These skills will transfer from middle school to high school, college and ultimately benefit students working with colleagues in their chosen profession.
Application of these techniques has been difficult due to the nature of my current student seating arrangement.
With a donation of classroom tables, the sometimes difficult logistic of student placement and movement for such collaborative activities within the classroom will be remedied. Thank you so much for your consideration!
