Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic and eager to learn every single day. I watch them find joy in the little things. I constantly look for ways to provide students with a learning space that inspires them read, engage and create.
Beyond a traditional library experience, my goal is to provide a safe place to learn where students can read, explore and discover.
Our student population is comprised primarily of low-income households, and we strive to make our school a safe haven.
Last year, Hurricane Harvey disrupted our campus in a big way. School did not start on time and even worse, student homes were damaged by the waters, making it difficult to maintain a sense of normalcy for months. One of the saddest things is watching students struggle both emotionally and academically. For this reason, I'm determined to create a safe learning environment full of possibilities.
My Project
Currently students have been using dollar store earbuds I purchased to use with devices for coding activities during Hour of Code. However, over 100 students use them every day and the inexpensive earbuds break, and tangle plus they have to be sanitized after every student use.
Having a class set of over-the-ear headphones would not only save instructional time but would allow students to complete Hour of Code activities with ease and comfort.
Earbuds are not a one size fits all and most of my students have to use one hand to hold an earbud in one hand and the other hand to navigate the programs.
Having over-the-ear headphones for Coding during our weekly Hour of Code or Google CS First activities, Nearpod and Discovery Education lessons would eliminate student frustration and anxiety. Beyond those activities, students would use headphones to listen to audio and eBooks in the library after check out. Without a doubt, having a class set of headphones would save instructional time and enhance student engagement year-round.
