Do you have a best friend? Who are better friends then Henry and Mudge??? My students would like to get to know them....
We are a public school in Pennsylvania.
We are first graders who are learning to become independent thinkers and readers through literature circles. We enjoy listening to stories on cd and discussing. We are learning to read chapter books and become fluent in our reading.
My Project
Learning to read is difficult. It is even more difficult to read if the literature circle you are in has one book to share amongst a group of students. How can my students learn to think critically and work on fluency and comprehension with few resources and without multiple books to use. Literature circles create independence and leaders in reading as well as other subjects. I have students who need to listen to stories on tape, including read alouds, for better comprehension and focus due to disabilities. WIth these few resources, students can independently read, become confident and find joy in listening to a story on cd and being able to actively participate and not feel secluded because of a disability.
For students who have limited reading resources at home, if I could give them a strong literature environment in school, I will be helping to close the gap amongst my students by creating readers, and independence through critical thinking with diverse literature.
