My Students

I am a kindergarten teacher at a school in Kensington, Philadelphia. Kensington is best known for extreme poverty, homelessness, drug abuse, and gang violence. Sadly, a lot of the children that I work with have faced more hardship in their young lives than anyone could imagine. Many have lost parents to violence or incarceration. Others experience abuse on a daily basis from those who claim to care for them.

In the midst of this challenging and traumatizing environment, we have precious children trying to learn how to read and write.

They don't always come to school ready to learn, but with love from teachers and relationships with classmates, school become a safe haven for many of these kids. Despite their daily struggles these children work hard to better their own lives through education.

Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty that affects them every day. Although these children put in the work to learn how to read and write the reality is that most of them are academically grade levels behind their peers nationwide.

My Project

Literacy is the key to learning. When a child is able to read they are able to interact with the world. Almost every part of daily life requires some level of reading. Sadly, within many schools in impoverished neighborhoods students struggle to become literate members of society. This affects their ability to succeed in grade school, inhibits them from continuing on to college, and makes it challenging to get a job in the future.

When children are given the opportunity to read, they flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.

The iPads requested will open up an enormous online library for my students to tap into and enjoy. There are countless online libraries, reading programs, and virtual classrooms for my students to explore. These libraries provide them with books on any topic that they could imagine. These reading programs and virtual classrooms give them the opportunity to learn at their own pace in an engaging way.
