"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." — Victor Hugo, Les Miserables
Reading is one of the most valuable skills that one can ever learn. This year, I want to help my students to develop that skill.
My students are middle school students with exceptional learning needs.
Although they are in middle school, their reading skills are similar to those of a first grade student. These students come from a high-poverty area in an urban environment, and their reading deficiencies create even greater, but senseless obstacles for their future success. I want them to be able to make choices in their future. As a result, developing reading skills is going to be a major priority for the scholars in my classroom during the upcoming school year.
My Project
These resources will be used in a variety of different ways by the students in my classroom. As middle schoolers, they rarely have the opportunity to read texts which are at their level. A leveled books library will provide them with text options to read at their individual levels. Some of my students struggle to read sight words. Sight word books and puzzles will help them to learn those words in a variety of different ways. A reading skills folder game library will help my students to build their reading skills in a way that is both fun and interesting.
One of the greatest impacts of this project is that it will help my students to create greater independence.
Being able to build their reading comprehension, sight word, and fluency skills while working independently will help them to become successful readers.
