As we embark on our novel study, I would like to request enough novels for each student to read independently, as they have voted for these particular books. These engaging novels will be the first independent book study of the year. Next year in middle school, these students will focus on a novel study for classwork and for homework. Completing this in class with support this year will help to prepare them to foster more independence when they are 6th graders.
Additionally, creating a more comfortable seating arrangement would significantly help in fostering a relaxing reading environment.
Students love to R+R in our classroom (relax and read), but we only have enough for a handful. Some additional comfy seating will help create a comfortable atmosphere so students can get lost in a great book.
I also believe it would be beneficial to have a chart to reinforce and celebrate students meeting their reading goals. Students will earn stickers for each chapter they read, highlighting their successes. We can use the new book marks to help with some "buy in" with more reluctant and striving readers. This initiative will not only enhance their current learning but also prepare them for similar experiences next year in middle school.
