This grant will have a tremendous impact on third graders at Old Pointe Elementary. The resources I am requesting will be used year after year and will effect hundreds of students who enter my classroom. I teach in a self contained third grade class. I teach all subjects. 38% of our population receives free or reduced lunch and has limited educational experiences and resources at home.
One of the greatest joys I had as a young girl was being read aloud to each evening. Little did I know that this daily ritual would have such a lasting effect on me. I adore reading and strive daily to instill that love in my students. I read aloud everyday, but it's not enough. Many of my students do not have an opportunity to read at home period, let alone have someone else read to them. I want to create a listening center in my classroom where students can listen to stories on tape. A center that is warm and inviting and supplied with fabulous literature, both fiction and non-fiction ~ a place where children can go and hear stories of the past, biographies of famous Americans, fairy tales, folk tales, picture books and novels ~ a place where literature can come to life ~ a place where students can experience and embrace the many joys books can offer. I am requesting a Read Along Listening Center as well as 12 sets of read along books and cassettes. Not only will your generous donation help improve students' listening, fluency, comprehension skills, it will promote a life-long love of reading as well.
