Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Basic supplies are a luxury for our classroom. They may be necessary but basic supplies use up most of my annual budget which could be used instead to buy engaging and motivating classroom supplies.
I am a second grade teacher in a Title 1 school and that means that my students come from low socioeconomic households.
Despite these challenges, the students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their math, writing, reading, science and social studies skills.
My Project
I appreciate that in my school district all basic school supplies are provided for the children from day one. This is a major help to the families we serve. However, purchasing these basic supplies takes most of my annual classroom budget that could be buying books, technology, and creative supplies. Because I believe in giving my students exciting life experiences, I often buy these other, more engaging supplies with my own money.
If basic school supplies were a burden that could be removed from my budget, the money leftover could provide field trips, art materials, informational text, favorite picture books, hands-on science materials, and more.
Pencils, notebooks, folders, erasers, and markers are classroom essentials.
I currently buy these essentials with my annual budget. At the end of the school year, I will have spent $500 on classroom essentials and much more of my own money buying thrilling items for my kids to have a memorable education. The dry erase markers, caps, and portfolios I have requested would be an excellent gift to begin the school year. The money saved can be used in a variety of exciting ways.
