Ready For Whatever Comes Our Way In Second Grade

Help me give my students books to learn our second grade standards while libraries are limited or closed.

My Students

My students are a mix of American families, immigrant families, and refugee families who were forced to leave their country out of fear for their lives. They have come to the U.S. in search of a better life. All my students are curious and resourceful children who come from all over the world, bringing a wealth of cultural and linguistic knowledge.

Our school strives to bring together refugee, immigrant, and local children in an academically challenging and nurturing environment.

Though we have limited resources, we work hard to prepare students both socially and academically.

As a Second Grade teacher, I teach them Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science. They teach me about perseverance and the value of diversity.

My Project

I am very luck to be looping with my class this year from first to second grade. Like other schools around the country, we finished our school year online last year to help protect students and staff from Covid-19. Looking ahead to second grade, we're not sure what the year will bring. We will start the year virtually and then hope it will be safe to return to our building later.

As we learn our second grade curriculum we will have limited or no access to libraries to check out books, so please help me to have access to engaging read alouds to teach grade level standards.

Whether we are having virtual or in person classes, quality read alouds will be key to helping students succeed and learn everything they need to know in second grade.

I'd also to like to provide materials to help children regulate their emotions during these stressful times. Last year we had a calm corner in our classroom that was open to anyone who needed time to calm down and breathe. It had stuffed animals, fidgets, and visuals for students to use. Students visited it regularly and it was so helpful. Now that we can not share supplies, even if we do return to the building, I would like for each student to have their own set of calming tools.
