I am fortunate to have exceptional students in Painting 1 this year. Even those with little previous painting experience have tackled the basics in acrylic and watercolor with enthusiasm and skill.
To flex their creative muscle beyond the basics, I want to introduce them to mixed-media techniques including texture gels, gelly plate and linocut prints, gouache paints, and metallic inks.
Most of these painting students have expressed the intent to continue their art studies next year in Advanced Placement Art and Design, and for quite a few, this will be the first AP class they have even considered taking. That is huge. Learning to experiment, practice, and revise art ideas is essential in the AP art studio, but these are also beneficial skills that translate beyond the art room. By introducing my students to exciting new mediums this year, I hope to ignite a creative spark that will carry us through this semester and into next year.
