Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low socioeconomic school in Southern California where all students receive free lunch. My students are special because they are in a bilingual kindergarten class. Seventy percent of our day is in Spanish and 30% of our day is in English. I have 24 students with different needs, personalities, and learning modalities. Most of my students are English language learners, but I do have English speakers who want to learn how to read and write in two languages. How awesome is that?
My Project
At the beginning of the school year, students need a lot of practice with writing their name, practicing penmanship of the alphabet, and writing their numbers. One of the best ways to do that is by inserting practice sheet in reusable dry erase pockets and sheet protectors. Every time one of my students claims to be done with an assignment, they know to practice with their reusable protectors. I also use the sheet protectors to protect their certificates and art projects so they can take them home and cherish them. The sheets will be used along with the whiteboard markers. I love this because it saves time in making copies and more importantly it helps save trees by not having to use all that paper.
