My Students
I teach in a suburban area in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. My school is a K-5 school and my third-grade classroom is extremely diverse. My classroom consists of African American, Asian, Hispanic, Caucasian, and other ethnicities.
This is a special education and gifted cluster classroom.
That means that many of my students that have different needs. Some students are identified gifted, others have individualized education plans, and a few students are general education students.
My Project
A handful of my gifted students are ready to take on a more challenging chapter book during our small group sessions. These students would benefit from a book that allows them to dig deep by using their higher order thinking skills. All of these students are able to comprehend text above their own grade level, so the books chosen, Breakout, By Kate Messner, and Becoming Naomi Leon, by Pam Muñoz Ryan, to name a few, will allow them to read a text that is challenging enough to grab their attention AND hopefully leave them with wanting more after every small group session. It is crucial that gifted students are being challenged and are invested in a good read, so with your help, we could make a huge difference in their education by providing them with challenging opportunities!
