This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

I want my students to have the resources they need in order to be successful.

It is so important that my students have a safe, fun environment from the minute they walk in the door of my classroom to the time they are dismissed. Each students is different, socially, emotionally and academically. I focus on their individual potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

As a new teacher, you ask yourself where to begin!

I have realized how important it is to be organized but more importantly that the classroom needs to be a welcoming place where students feel safe, comfortable and are provided with the materials needed to be successful! I have 30 students in a high poverty school district.

At the beginning of the year school supplies are requested, but very rarely make their way into the classroom. I want to make sure that those students, who don't have them, know that there are plenty of supplies for them in the classroom and that they are accessible. Pencils, a pencil sharpener are necessary to have within the classroom...without them not much can be done. Colored folders will allow me to simplify and assist me in organizing my students with disabilities. Instead of just saying, please get your writing folder, I can ask my students to get their "purple writing folder". My students all perform at different levels and require resources to assist them to excel. I want to see all of my students achieve their independent goals and am so grateful for your assistance in making this happen!
