Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten students need movement and structure throughout the day. In order to accomplish this, I plan to implement Reading/Writing Workshops throughout the day which require students to move back and forth between whole group discussions and small group/pairs and independent work time.

My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households.

Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. Many struggle simply to help their children with completing daily homework assignments. Yet, the children are eager to learn and come to school every day with positive attitudes, ready to build on the knowledge they have gained over time. Many of my kindergarten students will be learning how to follow routines and procedures. They will also be learning how to work in pairs, small groups, and whole group activities. They will benefit from physical and visual cues that help them develop the stamina to listen and to complete academic activities. They will also benefit from a physical environment that is structured to help them grow their sense of boundaries and self control.

My Project

My kindergarten students are developing the habits necessary to be successful scholars. In order to support their ability to quickly shift from whole group instruction to small group/pairs/individual work time, I see them moving back and forth from their desks/assigned seats to these designated carpeted areas for short 10 minute whole group mini-lessons during our Readers' Workshop and Writers' Workshop. I have found that kindergarten students need visual cues to make mental shifts from one activity to another. They also need body/brain movement breaks to regroup. Finally, they need cues to help them become more aware of personal boundaries. The carpets I have selected have squares which will give students a visual cue of where they will sit and a sense of personal space. These mini-lessons on the carpet will help students maintain focus, participate in turn and talk sessions with partners, and develop muscle memory that when they are on the carpet they will actively listen.

Kindergarten students need a classroom environment that is organized and has clearly designated areas for different activities.

These carpeted areas will become visual/physical cues that encourage students to shift their focus throughout the day. They will develop the habit of code-switching. They will learn to be aware of different expectations/routines/roles when they are asked to participate in whole group activities versus small group/pair/individual activities.
