Bridging Science and Literature? I know, it seems crazy, but it's possible. I hope to inspire my students to read more than fictional stories about werewolves and vampires and pick up a book about modern scientific research.
My school is in a high poverty / high minority area with little funding for the sciences.
Budget cuts for the last five years have taken away my students' chance to do many labs and activities because of simple lack of funds. I hope to find funding for both hands-on labs I would like to do with my students, and for novels to encourage them to read and expand the lexicon (i.e. their mental bank of words).
In my classroom I really want to provide my students with both engaging hands-on labs and great examples of science-related literature. I want them to read about the world of science and then also experience it for themselves. We need 20 copies of The Wold Trees to be inspired to read and study science. These novels are the prefect chance to show them how science can be fun, adventurous and an interesting read. I'm requesting this non-fiction novel because it's on my students' reading level and perfectly depicts the modern world of Ecology in a very interesting manner.
I struggle to get my students to read, and if they read it's always some teen fiction novel.
I really want to help prepare them for college (if that's the road they take) and encourage them to read great non-fiction books. This class set would allow me to read the book along with them and generate a group discussion of the book. I truly look forward to hearing my student talk about what they discover from this book.
