it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help inspire a lifelong love of reading for students in a high need, low income community with unlimited potential!
I teach 5th grade in a high need, low income school which was restructured three years ago and is doing exceptionally well!
We recently became the first elementary school in our part of the state to exit Program Improvement 5! We also just found out in April that we were a 2010 California Distinguished School! In large part this is due to the use of proven teaching techniques that are effective for all learners but especially English language learners which make up 80% of our population of students. Our school is structured based on the belief that these students (and all students!) deserve a quality education and can achieve! And they are truly doing this! We just need support getting the materials we need to make learning engaging and effective for all students.
My Project
Our class needs a variety of high interest nonfiction books about subjects related to our curriculum and topics which students are interested in reading about to gain information. These books will be high interest to maintain the energy that students are developing about reading. These nonfiction books are excellent motivators as they are at a variety of reading levels and students are very interested in them! I have recently been able to get my students excited about reading, but now I need to be able to give them the books they have been asking for and that can change their lives forever! We also have the AR tests for these books, so after students read them they can take a test on their comprehension of that book which is another way to track progress!
As I am sure you are aware, students that do not read at grade level in elementary school are rarely able to ever catch up which literally affects their lives forever.
I am determined for all students in my class to make more that one year's growth on their reading level. In order to do that I need to combine my instruction with quality and high interest books at a variety of levels in order to motivate and maintain student interest.
