My Project

My reading workshop and ELA students are eager to learn, but struggle with different learning disabilities or low reading and writing skills. Throughout the year they have made great strides, but continue to need support to increase literacy. Covid-19 impacted student learning in a clear and devastating way. Many students in my classrooms are 3 and 4 years behind grade level in reading and writing.

Creating an engaging, print-rich environment where students are excited to read is a powerful way to increase student literacy.

Building my library with books written by diverse authors allows students to choose from a wide variety of interesting books with characters that remind them of themselves. Books that are relatable to the reader create a wonderful bridge to literacy. My reading workshop class focuses on building oral reading fluency. When whole class work is completed, students have time to curl up with a good book. Having a range of books for them to read is crucial. Engaging books like "When You Trap a Tiger," and "Island of the Blue Dolphins," written by diverse authors, coupled with reading & writing games and supplemental material will bolster literacy and a love of reading in our classroom.

Supplemental reading and writing support is critical to developing literacy for students who are already behind grade level. These materials will allow me to work in small groups while some students work independently to develop their skills. These materials are engaging and well-crafted to provide the support students need to work independently as they journey to become better writers and readers.
