Reading, Writing, and Robots?

My students need books and materials which will allow each student to build four different exciting robots as they sharpen their reading and writing skills.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Abordo's classroom raised $633

My Students

Our classroom is a place of challenge and discovery! While we live in the most impoverished county in California, our dreams and determination to achieve a brighter future are undimmed. Our little town is both friendly and remarkably beautiful; however, many families struggle financially. As a very small, rural, Title I school, all of our students participate in both the free lunch and free breakfast programs. The wonderful first to fifth grade students who visit my Reading Intervention classroom work diligently to sharpen their reading and writing skills. They eagerly strive to move forward in their academic careers.

My Project

How do you convince a reluctant reader to devour every book you can offer? It's easy when you connect reading with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) projects! Students become so curious and involved in their projects that they direct their own learning by asking questions and researching to find answers.

Imagine children running off the playground to eagerly line up for Reading Intervention.

This Spring we will end the year with a high interest unit of study on robots. As we discuss the central question of "How can you get a robot to do what you want it to do?" students will read non-fiction books on including robots including "National Geographic Readers: Robots" and “National Geographic Kids Everything Robotics: All the Photos, Facts, and Fun to Make You Race for Robots.” Next, students will build four different types of mini robots to allow for hands on discoveries about robots, coding, and circuitry. My budding robotic engineers will design and create their own Artbot, make a Magnetbot and "teach" it to go through a maze, construct a Glidebot and watch it fly, and create habitats for their own Hexbug Nano pet! Finally, the students will split into research teams and create Google Slide presentations on how to build and program their favorite type of robot. These presentations will be shared with members of their regular classroom during a special end of the year party. As we say goodbye for the summer, students will take home all four of the robots they created. We have learned to read. Please help us find the excitement of reading to learn! Won't you consider supporting our project and allowing my students the joy of mastering the foundational skills of robotics as they sharpen their reading skills?
