Reading, Writing and Math in the 21st Century...iPads!
My students need 2 iPads to access technology for practicing reading, comprehension, phonics, spelling and math skills while remaining in the class under my supervision.
Do you need a teenager to help you with today's technology? Please help me create the next generation of computer savvy students by providing iPads that will allow daily, hands-on access to technology that makes learning and practicing concepts fun while remaining in the classroom under supervision.
My students are 6 or 7 year old first graders who have been raised with technology.
They play on the iPhone's of their parents. They are drawn to fast paced video games and movies. They have endless enthusiasm for learning and sharing what they think. Our Michigan school has a large population of families struggling to make ends meet. Our school is affiliated with the International Baccalaureate program. We strive to establish and maintain an educational community that empowers all students to become principled, independent inquirers who are socially responsible global citizens.
My Project
First grade students need parent volunteers to use the computer lab to access technology. Having two iPads, plus my own, will enable my students to access technology at all times of the day while remaining in the classroom under my supervision. There are a variety of fabulous activities available online. One I'd like students to use all the time is Learning A-Z. There are fiction and non fiction books available at each student's reading level. They can read the book themselves, listen to the book on tape and take comprehension quizzes on the book. Scholastic News Magazine has social studies and science magazine articles with many nonfiction features such as graphs, charts and diagrams to which students need exposure. MobyMath provides individual targeted math practice based on student performance on placement tests. Spelling City has fun games that practice words I enter for each student based on their ability. Having 3 iPads will allow kids daily, hands-on use of technology.
Classroom iPads will help students practice skills in all subject areas, which students have always needed.
However, these future employees will need to communicate and take competency tests using technology! Exposing students to digital communication early in their education will help them learn to write clear and polite correspondence. Students will enjoy learning these skills more with technological tools at the ready and with ever-inventive apps to spark their imagination! Please help!
