You might not believe it, but my ninth-grade students love keeping ongoing journal entries in their classroom notebooks. As an English teacher at an urban high school serving an "at-risk" population, I believe that the process of recording experiences and feelings through writing is of enormous benefit to my students. Kids-- especially boys-- who were initially resistant to the idea of keeping a journal now voluntarily write additional entries, even taking their classroom notebooks home to write more. My greatest hope is to have students continue their journal writing over their summer vacation, when, all too often, academic skills like reading and writing rapidly decline. Thus, I am seeking 60 basic writing journals-- nicer than the usual composition notebook, but they certainly don't need to be leather-bound editions-- for my 60 freshman English students to use this summer. I plan to personalize each journal with the student's initials and an inspirational quote. Along with these journals, I'd love to be able to give each student a nice pen so that they can begin their summer journaling right away. I believe that my students-- resource-poor but imagination-rich-- will truly appreciate and make good use of this gift. My kids love to write about their lives, and that practice is making them into better writers. Most importantly, perhaps, it is giving them a much-needed space to process their daily experiences and emotions, to make sense of the details of their lives.
