This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an amazing place for students to grow, learn, and achieve! We meet the needs of our students by supporting our bilingual students, students with disabilities and English language learners, as well as students in need of speech and occupational therapies.

We work hard to offset the disadvantages that large portions of our school population face.

In many student neighborhoods there is violent crime and school is often the safe space many of our students get to experience. We are a Title 1 district.

Our reading intervention program is divided between 2 teachers who share a classroom. One teacher has a primary focus (K-2) and the other teacher is grades three-five. Between both of us, we normally have a case-load of over 100 students each year.

While our students have diverse backgrounds--we just love how much they love to come and learn to read! We work on increasing the reading levels of all at-risk students that we see.

My Project

This project would enable our academic intervention classroom to become the first in our district with this type of flexible seating environment. Our school district mission is, “Through the work of all, we will achieve inclusive excellence.” This improvement in our reading intervention physical classroom space will allow us to more effectively meet the needs of our diverse student population.

Research has shown that students with the ability to move during instruction have increased on task behavior, which will lead to increased academic achievement.

Research has also shown that classrooms with alternative seating increases the feeling of community within the classroom. Students that we see are already at risk since they are reading one or more grade levels below expectation. Reading difficulties in students often affect a child’s self esteem and increased frustration in school. Our goal with our reading interventions is to not just improve their reading abilities, but also increase their self esteem. Reading achievement has a direct link to predicted student success in life.

We would like to give all of our students every possible opportunity to increase their reading abilities, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or culture.
