Kids just want to have fun! Kindergarten students don't want worksheets and flashcards, they want their learning experiences to be fun and engaging at their developmental level. With the push of more difficult curriculum and learning standards in kindergarten, I am determined to keep our learning fun and active!
My students come to school with very diverse needs in their school readiness skills.
Some can't identify a number or a letter of the alphabet, while some begin Kindergarten with the experience of preschool and are ready to explore the curriculum at a deeper level. I have 25 students who are five and six-years-old in a full day kindergarten classroom. Our school is considered "high poverty" due to our large percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced lunches.
My Project
Our School District will be implementing a new reading curriculum starting this fall! Along with new curriculum comes changes in the what, how, and when teachers will be implementing this new curriculum. One of the new changes heading my way come August is the addition of the Reading Workshop. The majority of our new Reading Workshop involves the students working by themselves and with a partner with many books that are matched to their reading level. There are many types of new activities the students will be doing with their books.
Our classroom needs some supplies so that kindergarteners CAN spend a big chunk of time working with their books, even if they aren't quite ready to read all the words!
We will use the easel pads and markers to make group charts about sight words and word chunks and the tagboard to make our smaller charts with a partner. We need a large variety of post-it notes, sentence strips, and tape so we can copy down new sight words from our books and share those with our partners and the class by sticking them to our reading charts and posters. We will use highlighter tape, flag tabs and write on page markers to mark in our books all the things we need to share with our partners - that could be anything from a tricky word they can't decode, a really cool part of a non-fiction book they want to share with their partner, or all the words they found that contain the /ch/ sound!
