My Students

I have a very hard-working and energetic group of second graders at my Title 1 school. My students have been directly impacted by the COVID pandemic in that they missed a crucial time, the end of Kindergarten , they missed out on many of the reading foundational skills and lessons that would have prepared them to be strong readers in second grade. In addition, the past year of 1st grade many were distance learners, many had health exclusions where they accrued many absences and even the students that were in-person learning all year had a very different experience than what would be the expected 1st grade "normal".

My Project

Daily read-alouds, especially those that can provide access not only to real books, but stories that also have an underlying SEL theme are inspiring and encouraging to my young learners. We need books in the hands of our students to encourage them to love to read. Access to digital technology is essential at this time so that all students can have access to the most engaging and grade level appropriate materials. I am doing everything I to can get them growing and ready for 3rd grade and beyond, without having to always fall back on the fact that they missed essential skills due to COVID's effects. The Nevada Academic Content Standards for English Language Arts states that students who are college and career ready, "...build strong content knowledge. Students establish a base of knowledge across a wide range of subject matter by engaging with works of quality and substance."
