My Students
Many of the students in my classes struggle with reading. They work diligently every day in an attempt to achieve grade level reading skills. This is made even more difficult by the conditions in which they live. Most of the students in my classes come from low-income homes and many are ELL students .Because of their low level of reading, they don't enjoy the process and the struggle continues. My goal as a reading teacher is to not only help my students achieve grade level reading skills but also to help them develop a love of reading.
My Project
Thinking I was going to retire, and having given away all of my supplies, I have recently returned to the classroom. I have accepted a position teaching reading to students who have struggled to reach grade-level proficiency. I am requesting 25 copies of the popular young adult novel, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Additionally, I am requesting 25 copies of the must-have book, The House On Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros.
These novels will be used to help students develop an appreciation and perhaps a love of reading by exposing them to beautiful language and relevant, real-life situations.
