Our elementary school is an urban Title 1 school where the vast majority of students receive free or reduced lunch.
What we lack in resources, we make up for in fun!
Each year, my approximately 25 energetic and fun first grade students' favorite memories include daily read alouds, literacy and math stations, STEM projects and experiments, singing, dancing, and a variety of different art and writing projects. How cool that their favorite memories include so much learning! One of the best things about first graders is that they love to learn!
My Project
Beginning readers gravitate toward characters that are fun, relatable, and familiar. Pete the Cat, Piggie and Gerald, the Pigeon, and Fly Guy are fictional characters that have resonated with my classes year after year. Early readers also love nonfiction books with bright colorful pictures and clear texts. National Geographic consistently produces books that inspire my class to learn more about animals and the world around us.
The books and other supplies in this project help to inspire a life long love of reading and learning.
The remaining supplies help me make learning as organized, hands on, and meaningful as possible.
