Do you remember cuddling up to read a bedtime story? Do you remember asking, "What happens next?" Many of my children have only a few books in their homes. They need exposure to many new books, with activities to encourage the reading and comprehension of the books.
My students are four year old "at risk" students, as defined by my state funding.
They live in an urban city and go to their neighborhood school. Many of my parents don't drive, and with the nearest library currently closed, and no bookstores in the area, there is very little access to books for my students to read. They love to listen to stories, and particularly enjoy reading one-on-one with an adult. With my prekindergarten classroom being the first school experience for them, it is crucial that I stress the importance of reading, and pass on my love of reading to the children.
I am requesting a set of backpack book kits for my students. These backpacks include a book for the students to read with their parents, and some activities that go along with the books. These books will encourage lap-reading experiences, where the parents read to the children. The added activities will help the parents and children to discuss the story, which will lead towards reading comprehension, which is so important in these first reading stages. These book kits will enhance the parent-child bond, and help those parents that either have trouble finding books, or have trouble relating a book to their child's life. I will use these books in a library-like format, "checking out" books to children throughout the school year.
Your donation will greatly enhance my students' book-reading experiences.
In addition, your donation will help expand my parent program. These books will be read and loved for many years.
