Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I elementary school in a NYC borough. My Kindergarten students are eager and ready to learn despite the hardships they face, such as learning disabilities, learning English as a second language, poverty and coming from an immigrant population. They are full of questions and at times shy, but they love coming to school and learning something new everyday. Many of the parents have a limited education and are unable to provide academic support. That is why a positive and enriching school experience and the proper tools are so important. I want them to have the chances and opportunities that are not offered in many parts of the world, a chance to rise above their circumstances.
My Project
My students are English Language Learners with special needs, most of them also have speech and language delays. One of our goals is to provide a print rich environment that will motivate them to explore the world through books and expose them to as many books as we can in their native language as well as English. Studies show that students who have a good foundation of literacy skills in their native language are able to transfer theses skills to a second language with greater success. My students are just beginning their journey to becoming readers and these bilingual resources (alphabet books, leveled reading libraries and storybooks) are exactly what they need to experience success. They are already falling in love with books, learning the letters of their names and recognizing sight words. They are excited about learning, sharing everyday experiences and making connections from text to Self and from text to World. Your donation will make a great impact in their educational journey.
