My students need books focusing on Malalas story and iPads for research about girls education. They will share books, bags, and activities they create with book buddies.
Located on a steep hilltop, our school overlooks a panoramic view of downtown. Students who have not been successful at traditional high schools find success and self-motivation within rich academic settings.
All students have the opportunity to select a project that matches their own interests and learning styles focusing on music, performing arts, wilderness and environment, media arts and urban gardening!
These programs prepare students for the real world, building essential life skills. Service-learning and social justice are essential elements During the semester students read to little book buddies at a neighborhood school.
My Project
In the library classes will use iPads to research educational issues for girls. They will also view and discuss the film "He Named Me Malala," read related books and explore websites to learn to be WithMalala. They will compile a timeline of events in her life and discuss ideas for talking about Malala to little book buddies at the elementary school. They will read the book PushOut that reflects current school issues that are familiar to many of our students. They will also read and review related picture books on education issues for girls. For each title, students will create into, through and beyond activities to engage book buddies as they read together. They will use the book bags for books and materials to take to the book buddy classroom. Students will write short reflections on the topic and why it is important to study and to share.
Many of our students have difficult lives.
They will learn about a teenager who experienced trauma and brought change to the world. They will read about some familiar current problems for girls and also research and read about current and historical context on education for girls. They will research, discuss and then create ways to share their knowledge with younger students. As they work they will realize they are becoming experts and teachers and positive models for little reading buddies!
