My Project

I teach in an urban district with students who come from transient backgrounds. Within our district, we have many students coming from various cultures with a several linguistic diversities. We are a Title 1 district where students are served breakfast and lunch for free.

My students are lively, passionate, engaged, and thrive in the classroom.

Their smiles and excitement to walk into our room ready to learn and read motivates me each and every day. I want to be able to reach my students and impact their lives with the rich content.

Recent events have really brought a focus to diversity and a representation for students of indigenous ethnicity into print. I want to share books that highlight all of my students cultures.

Our district is moving to a science and social studies based reading program. I want to showcase more indigenous authors in my classroom as we begin our studies in diverse topics. I want to be more diverse in my selections of read alouds to foster deeper connections to topics through print.

There has been a shift within education towards shining a light on 'representation for all' and that should not exclude the books that we share with our students. I can share with my students a rich blend of indigenous characters, authors, and illustrators using books like "A Different Pond", "Swimming Towards a Dream", and "Before She Was Harriet". I have searched for text that will enrich the content while sharing different cultures like "Watercress" and historical events like "Guts for Glory. It is not just a want; I NEED my students to feel represented with more of my book selections and the content I share.
