Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Students enter second grade at varying reading levels and varying interests in reading. Most often those with lower reading levels have lower interest in reading. These weekly magazines engage and motivate all readers to read.

My classroom is located in Washington, DC.

This August, I will welcome a new group of second graders through the doors of my class, ready to learn alongside them. Second graders love to learn about the world around them. They love to become experts of their favorite animals, holidays and places in the world.

My Project

Weekly Readers and Time For Kids are powerful tools in the hands of emergent readers. They use colorful photographs to grab attention, feature articles about other children, and discuss current events that students want to know more about. Students learn many different reading skills eagerly and with ease because they are motivate to read them each week. With a classroom subscription to these magazines each students gets their own copy to take home. This allows them to show their family what they are learning and how excited they are about learning it!

When students are motivated to read, teaching them to read gets easier.

These resources are important because they help students begin a pattern of reading to understand the world around them and gain the skills to unlock a lifetime of literacy.
