Imagine going to school every day not being able to read like the other kids. My middle school students are eager to learn but struggle to read. They strive to improve their reading ability in order to help further their learning in all subjects. My students are learning about life and trying to fit in with their peers. They are really sweet kids but are having difficulty keeping up. They do not enjoy reading because is hard work for them. I want them to enjoy reading more and they want to as well. They need access to more books that interest them but on their reading level.
My Project
These high interest / low level books will interest my students that have difficulty reading. The books that are in my classroom now are of interest to my students but are too difficult for them. My students get frustrated when they try to read the books that interest them and the books they can read seem too "babyish" for their age. I often hear that they hate reading and many of them only pretend to read.
My goal is to help my students experience the joy of reading while increasing their skills in reading.
The books I chose are high interest / low level books that will not scare them away from reading. I chose multiple copies of the books so some can be used in reading groups while others may be used to partner read. Books like "Shelter" are more modern stories that my students can relate to. They will look forward to reading these books while working on comprehension, fluency, and basic reading skills. I have some students that are interested in sports but have a difficult time finding sports books they can read. I chose two books that will appeal to those students. I chose books that will appeal to the many different interests and levels of my students.
My students deserve quality books that they will look forward to reading while also improving their reading skills. I need your help to provide my classroom with these important resources. My students are in middle school and are reading at 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade levels. Please help me fill in the gaps to improve their reading as well as get them interested in reading.
