This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

We are the Readers Advisory Committee and we help choose the books for the library. We look at catalogs, book websites, best of lists, and other sites to determine what are the best books to buy for our library. There are ten of us from sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and a mix of boys and girls. We love to read and want others reading too and we make this happen by helping the librarian create the best Young Adult book collection around.

Acclaimed author Gene Yuen Lang is the book ambassador for the United States. He is promoting a reading challenge called: Read Without Walls. Professor Rudine Sims Bishop says books are like windows into others' lives or mirrors our experiences. At the library we would like to participate in this challenge and encourage students to read books that are windows and mirrors via a book club.

Reading together not only promotes literacy but community and empathy. Students will read books and come together to discuss the books over cookies and tea at lunch.

Students will become better readers while helping develop a reading culture at the school in which students discuss and share about books. Students will meet each month to discuss a book and how this book challenged them to understand someone else differently and broke down walls or barriers to understanding others.

In Their Own Words

We are hoping that more kids read at our middle school. Sometimes kids will say that only nerds read or they do not have time. We are hoping to show that reading is fun and it is fun to talk about stories with other students. We all like stories and we want to share good stories that might help students like reading more while also helping kids understand each other better.

The Readers Advisory Committee have already met to create a list of books for the book club. We chose the books based on surveys we took in our homerooms and what the school population is like. We will advertise the book clubs and encourage people to sign up that are not always are our friends. We will also lead the book club groups discussions with the help of our librarian. We will share our information with the school community.

A lot of people at school say they hate reading. This is really sad because reading is fun, educational and helps become good people. We have some low test scores and we think more reading will help everyone read better. We also are a very diverse school with many ethnicities, religions and languages. We think if kids either books about others' experiences or stories we will have less drama. Reading can save lives!
